Goodbye old friend...

It's been a sad day today,as the final rites have been read and the radio station that was Chrystal has been wound up for good.

For the unititiated,Chrystal was the radio station that served the patients and staff of the Sheffield Children's Hospital. It started in 1984,and over 25 years, launched the careers of many a DJ/presenter,such as Richard McCourt (CBBC/Dick n Dom),Anthony Gay (PD Rock FM,Preston),Chris Darlow (Magic AM),Ben Day (Touch Stafford),Jon Holling (UTV Network),Gav Richards (Hallam FM),Richie Pearson (Pennine FM),and many more.

For me,it was an opportunity to enjoy what I love best - radio. Now,in an ideal world,I would have loved to made my living playing music, talking down a microphone, and playing the odd jingle and advert.I have many friends who are living the dream...but unfortunately,I've now got to an age where reality has set in,and I may have to settle for the life of a customer service advisor, which is shit I know, but I have to be realistic. However, there's still that little thing at the back of my mind saying "give it a bloody good go,and you never know...",so don't write it off just yet.In fact,I might just be asking a big favour of a good radio buddy re a demo in the new year,if he's willing to help.

In fact,if anybody from a station is reading this,I can present not half badly,I can write a half decent commercial, and I make great tea...which everybody knows is a skill sadly lacking in some of these new breed :-)! Oh, (and with thanks to Robin Blamires,my old jingle buddy, for the reminder) I'm also the man who managed to fit Doner Kebab into the lyrics of a classic JAM cut, plus write this epic for Pete Wilson!

Right,music time,and let's pick something appropriate.

MARK GERMINO - REX BOB LOWENSTEIN

Taken from the 1987 album "Caught In The Act Of Being Ourselves",it tells the story of a DJ being forced to play the songs from an imposed format rather than what the listeners wanted, but refusing, locking himself in the studio and then being arrested for his crime.

For anybody that works in,or gravitates around the great medium radio is,it's a classic.

Enjoy.

This isn't just a rant....this is an M&S Rant...

It takes a lot to get me angry at the great British Public, but this story today made my wee boil...

The thing that's getting every one hot under the collar is a comment from Phil Glenister, for once using his own accent, but the line is pure Gene Hunt.....

"Oh come on, it's Christmas. That girl prancing around in her underwear."

We are then treated to the sight of M&S's underwear model,Noemie Lenoir,in her smalls,as we have been for the last couple of years since this campaign started..

But now,8 people so far are apparently have taken it upon thereselves to complain to the Advertising Standards Authority, stating that the advert is "demeaning to women".

8.Yes,8.

For fucks sake! Do these people sit at home,Parker Pen and Basildon Bond poised, ready to pounce? Is the ghost of Mary Whitehouse alive and kicking? Is it the fact that Ms Lenoir is moderately more attractive than the complainer? Or are we cotton wool wrapped, pernickerty, politically correct, narrow minded little englanders who yearn for victorian values, continuing a line of prudishness that even Queen Victoria would find rather oppressive?

Obviously, the answer's still yes.But what next will they find to complain about?

Will it be the fact that Stephen Fry uses the word "Mince" in the same advert and gives a knowing look, not even attempting to hide the fact that it's slang for homosexual behaviour? The ACTUAL fact that he makes no secret he's gay will be missed totally! Will it be the fact that Joanna Lumley refers to Jennifer Saunders "stuffing her face" and suggesting she may be,in fact, overweight? Christ,I'm not exactly sylph-like but do I find it offensive? Of course I bleeding don't! Will it be that Wallace & Gromitt can order on line and "not everybody has access to the internet"?  No,it bloody well won't!

To the 8 complainers,I give you these 2 invaluable pieces of Big Dave advice...

1 Look at the date. It is the year of our lord 2009,not 1859.

2 Arrange the following words into a phrase or saying...LIFE A GET TWATS SAD YOU

Right...music....

NEW MUSIK - THIS WORLD OF WATER

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpCJGWToxto

A cracking tune from 1980,this was one of 3 singles that made the charts for the London based band, the most famous being "Living By Numbers".

Mac Attack

First it was the Ipod - it held all my music! It was white and nice to look at! It was better than my mini disc!

Then it was the Macbook - much better than windows! Also white and nice to look at!

And now...I've gone the whole hog.

Yes,I've upgraded with Orange. To an Iphone.

Am I mad for being like a sheep and following the crowd? Am I becoming a MacSnob? Or is that it was about time the N95 was retired, even though it's been a cracking phone and will be a great standby should the above go tits up? Wait and see,as I'll have a go at activating it tomorrow along with the SIM card, and I'll let you know how I'm coping with it!

Anyway,as promised,more music...this time it's A Certain Ratio - I Won't Stop Loving You

The above track was remixed by New Order's Bernard Sumner, hence it's New Order-esque sound, and featured on a brilliant album "MCR",which is now as rare as rocking horse shit on CD,but guess who's got a copy? :-)

More soon!

In here, you'll eventually get to know my feelings,my rants at life in general, and best of all,I'll be posting some links to some classic tunes, found on the net..some good, some bad, some reight cheesy but I think worth a listen.

We start with this...

John Miles - Highfly

http://bit.ly/highfly

Yes,it's the same John Miles that recorded "Music" but this came from the same album,"Rebel",and is possibly the better track.

Enjoy...
